How to Make an On-Screen Outfit Shine

If you want to appear flattering while standing out on-screen, then you must take the time to think about each item of clothing. It’s not enough to choose an outfit that looks fantastic in the mirror; you must also consider how the camera will alter its appearance. If you are to appear on film, here are a few ways to make your outfit shine.

Keep it Simple

You don't need to be as flamboyant as possible to catch the attention of viewers. It is usually the subtler outfits that tend to draw the eye. Too many mismatched patterns and vibrant colors will look more distracting than eye-catching and won’t look attractive on-screen.

One Bold Color

One bold color can take a boring outfit and breathe life into it. If your character is supposed to wear simple office clothing, for example, then you could add in a bright red scarf or a bright scrunchie to show a pop of color. It will attract the eye without causing too much color chaos on the screen.

If you want to always have the option of using fun and different shades, then invest in some fabric dye. This way, you have more control over the shade of your clothing.

The Perfect Fit

While you might get away with something a little baggy or slightly too tight on the midriff in real life, on film, it’s not as easy to pull off. For this reason, it’s recommended that you see a tailor before standing in front of the camera. This way, your clothes will be the perfect fit and look stylish rather than misplaced.

If you don't have time to see a tailor, get handy with pins or a sewing kit to create a figure-hugging outfit.

Match the Makeup

You should either fit the makeup around the outfit or the outfit around the makeup. You don’t want to wear a bright yellow eyeshadow look with a blue outfit! (Unless that truly represents your character, of course).

If you have chosen an outfit, then follow up by choosing a makeup style that fits well. For example, a smoky eye looks stunning with the classic little black dress.

A Central Piece

As mentioned earlier, it’s best to keep it simple when you are on-screen to not detract from the scene at hand. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t have some unique pieces hanging off you. If you need to choose a simple outfit, then keep the items subtle but add one piece that stands out. This could be a bold necklace, a striking pair of shoes, or a dainty headband.

Choose Comfort

If you are in front of the camera for a long time, you must remember to stay comfortable. After all, if you are itching to get out of your outfit, it might impact your performance! Try on the clothes from a local womens clothing boutique before you make the final decision, and if there is any discomfort, ensure that it is sorted before the camera begins rolling.
