MOVIE REVIEW: Love and Mercy

Come to "Love and Mercy" for the music but stay for the involving double-barreled saga of creative energy, new-found redemption, and growing companionship.  This film relishes the understated vibe it seeks.  It's not earth-shatteringly profound as a story or a film.  It's not going to jump off the screen or crush your emotions.  However, this film will impress you and gain your respect.  That's better than 90% of the tired biographical films that hit cinemas every year.  Enjoy a winner right here.

MOVIE REVIEW: San Andreas

"San Andreas" is one of those terrible-to-OK movies that Dwayne Johnson makes either passable or good solely through his presence, heroics, and charisma alone.  We're a long way from great here, but "San Andreas" counts as mind-numbing fun that's fit for the summer season.  The errors, implausibilities, and eye rolls are as high as the city-leveling casualty rate, but Warner Bros. and company weren't aiming very high.

As much as this new take still feels rehashed on many levels, this sequel is the real deal as an exciting comic book adventure and spectacle.  "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is ideally suited to be the blockbuster opening act of the summer of 2014.  It indeed does embody a second film that is narrowly better than the first film.
