MOVIE REVIEW: In a Valley of Violence

“In a Valley of Violence” lives up to the promised bloodshed suggested by its title and spins its own brand of tension and, best of all, a frank and bone-dry humor that blows into the whole film.  You will either love the comedic edge or find it a distraction from the revenge.  There is an undeniable panache to the absurdity that makes the film an absolute hoot.  This is the giddy Western Quentin Tarantino wishes he could make while he wastes six hours of our time and stretched disbelief.

MOVIE REVIEW: Born to Be Blue

Any savvy film fan should know that first-rate musical biography films are less about the music and more about the artist.  The music becomes extroverted accompaniment to the introverted human elements behind the persona.  Presenting a career-best performance from Ethan Hawke, "Born to Be Blue" earns its place as one of the best jazz movies to grace the screen.  The film is an impressive creative step forward for Canadian director Robert Budreau in just his second feature-length effort.

MOVIE REVIEW: Good Kill

Technology may change in warfare but what doesn't change are the human themes.  The dramas, successes, fears, and results of victories and failures still apply, only the scope and scale has changed.  "Good Kill," the new film written and directed by Andrew Niccol, typifies that signature human impact of war.  Reunited with his "Gattaca" muse Ethan Hawke, Niccol delivers a very timely and provocative slow boiler with a great deal to say about the current modern state of warfare.

MOVIE REVIEW: Boyhood

What makes "Boyhood" this extraordinary experience and achievement is the opposite of that adjective: the ordinary.  Linklater and company sought to deliver a genuine interpretation of a life experience without flashy movie bells and whistles.  There is a subdued beauty behind the technical expertise.  They know real life events don't play out or turn out like they do in the movies.  They aren't announced with inane plot-descriptive dialogue by supporting characters and sidekicks.  Real lives move in moments and operate in nuances.  Our lives aren't backed by an orchestrational score and neither is "Boyhood."  By operating in that style, the uniqueness of this divorce, divided family, and period of long change becomes approachable and even ordinary compared to other over-the-top family dramas that require multiple grains of salt to accept so many contrivances.
