His new film, Nebraska, is his smallest and most nuanced film to date for Alexander Payne.  Shot in black-and-white on a micro-budget and populated by mostly unknown performers instead of Hollywood A-listers, the film strives to slow things down and give you something interesting to follow and compare with your own family's generational gaps.

MOVIE REVIEW: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

After seeing the second installment, the hotly anticipated The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, my gut feeling is that they are saving their best for their swan song and not the middle.  While the budget and star power have increased with success and maturity from the comparatively modest first film 20 months ago, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire does not do enough to achieve that level of being a great middle trilogy film on the same scale as The Empire Strikes Back orThe Dark Knight.

Thanks For Sharing goes to great lengths to highlight the varying degrees and effects of this disease and the clear need for solid support and rehabilitation, all while doing so in an entertaining manner.  There are fair jokes to be made, but they are matched by ugly dark flaws of character that could happen to any one of us.

MOVIE REVIEW: Drinking Buddies

To its great credit, Drinking Buddies never settles for any of those obvious scenarios and twists.  It takes a more elusive and challenging route once the couples combine on a double-date weekend at Chris's lake house.  The mistakes, flaws, and opportunities you think are coming, because you've seen this kind of movie before, don't materialize like you think.  Some don't materialize at all.  The waters are murkier than first thought.  If you prefer your movies predictable and formulaic, you've come to the wrong place.  At the same time, it's still missing a bit of the charm it promised with its setup.
